The Thalassocosmos of HCMR Crete officially started its operation in December 2005, in the area of Gournes in Crete, Greece, 15 km east of Heraklion, in a location which consists of a unique park of research, education, culture and recreation that aims to promote and diffuse knowledge for the marine environment.

The total area of Thalassokosmos is 58,000 m². The research facilities and workshops cover an area of 3,185 m². The building infrastructure also includes an amphitheater with a capacity of 150 people, two smaller seminar rooms, as well as the specially designed library area.

The Cretaquarium is operating under the HCMR umbrella, with the aim to stimulate interest in and develop and to spread knowledge about the marine environment, mainly focusing at the Eastern Mediterranean area.
